Common treatment for your pet in the event they ingest toxins

There are many different toxins and poisons in the common household. It is important to be able to recognize signs of toxicosis and know some life saving treatments you can do at home.  Below are the most common signs of toxin exposure and a couple quick treatments. 

Signs commin with toxin exposure:

•  Salivating (hypersalivation)
• Shaking (tremors)
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Seizures
• Oral ulcerations - caustic materials
• Trouble walking (ataxia)

Treatments for non-corrosive toxic ingestations:

Vomiting (emesis) can be induced if certain toxic items have been eaten such as:

• Chocolate
• Rate poision (Bromethalin, brodemcourin)
• Snail bait (methalthyde)

To induce vomiting :

Give 3% hydrogen peroxide - Give 1 tsp per 5 pounds of body weigh. You may repeat this one time but do not continue. 

****Feeding a small amount of absorptive food such as a piece of bread can help to increase chances of successful induction of vomiting****

Never induce vomiting for caustic substances such as house hold chemicals etc

What if my pet has skin contact with a poison?

Bath to remove caustic substances such as ie: Flea preventative- if tremors or seizures are noted

Bathing with a mild liquid dishwashing detergent ie: dawn dish soap, is a great way to remove substances from the skin and fur.
